A glimpse of Cefalù’s beach through a stone archway, captured while exploring Sicily’s enchanting old town. Colorful umbrellas dot the golden sand, the turquoise sea stretching toward the rocky headland beyond. The figures watching from below echo my own longing — we couldn’t resist joining the fun for long.
Cefalù has a way of pulling you in two directions at once. The old town demands your attention with its narrow Norman streets, ancient cathedral, and sun-warmed stone at every turn — yet all the while, glimpses of that impossibly blue sea keep appearing between the buildings, whispering that the beach is right there, just waiting.
This painting captures one of those in-between moments: the view through a stone archway, framing the beach beyond like a living postcard. Colorful umbrellas scatter across the golden sand, people lounging and laughing in the Sicilian sun, while the old harbour wall stretches into the turquoise water and the dramatic rocky headland rises in the distance.
The figures in the foreground — sitting, watching, quietly tempted — felt like the honest heart of the scene. That was us, pausing at the end of our wanderings, admiring the view and knowing we’d cave eventually. We explored the old town first, soaked up every corner of it — and then we headed down to the beach. The day deserved both.
